Online proctored tests

(HiSET Test at Home)

Online proctored exams have very strict rules and policies so make sure you understand and follow these guidelines. Review the online proctoring page on the PSI website and watch a test taker experience video here to make sure you are ready for exam day.

Eligibility for online proctored exams:

PSI and each state or jurisdiction has its own eligibility requirements for online proctored exams. This may include age restrictions, residency status and ID restrictions.

Important: Review the specific state guidelines before scheduling a test appointment and again before test day.

Technical and environmental checklist:

  • Equipment and Operating System: You’ll need a reliable computer (desktop or laptop) with a stable internet connection. The exam cannot be taken on mobile devices like tablets or smartphones. A functioning webcam and microphone are necessary for the proctor to monitor your exam session. Make sure your computer runs on a compatible operating system, such as Windows.
Important: Run an Online Proctoring Compatibility Check before exam day to check all your equipment works for your exam.
  • Secure browser: The exam is delivered through PSI’s Secure Browser, This browser prevents access to other applications or websites during the exam.
Important: Download and install the secure browser before your exam.
  • Testing environment: Choose a quiet, well-lit, and private room where you won’t be disturbed. The area should be free from unauthorized / banned materials, and no one else is allowed in the room during the exam.

Check-in process:

The check-in process is an important step in your online proctored exam session. You will need to chat with your check-in specialist, verify your identity, secure your testing environment, check your hardware and software equipment. Once you complete the check-in process, your exam will be available to launch.

Important: Watch the online proctoring check in video to know what to expect and reduce stress on test day.

During an online proctored exam:

The proctor will oversee your session to ensure you keep to the rules. Testing accommodations must be approved in advance. When necessary, you and the proctor will use the chat to communicate. Use only approved resources during the exam. Just like in a test center, the proctor will monitor you for banned behavior. Examples of prohibited behavior may include, but are not limited to:

  • Looking off the screen
  • Mumbling or speaking aloud
  • Using unauthorized materials as listed in the section below
  • Interacting with third parties intentionally or unintentionally
  • Leaving the circle of view of the webcam
  • Use of prohibited software
  • Cheating.

Suspicious activity may lead to your exam being paused or cancelled. Your testing session will be recorded. If you have technical issues during the exam, support is available to help you.
