Colorado HiSET® Requirements

About the Colorado HiSET® Exam

Earn the credential your future needs with the HiSET® High School Equivalency Test.

If you want to find a better job or take the first step on a pathway to a career, then you need to earn a high school equivalency credential. It is required for college and more important than ever to employers. Taking the HiSET exam can help change your life and expand your opportunities like it’s done for other test takers.

Colorado Eligibility Requirements

To take the HiSET exam in Colorado, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

Age: Typically, you may only take the HiSET exam if you are seventeen (17) years of age or older.

However, if you are sixteen (16) years old, you may take the HiSET exam if you are approved by the HiSET program for a HiSET Testing Age Waiver after meeting one of the conditions set by the Colorado HSE Office. If none of the conditions in the HSE age waiver apply, you cannot be approved and must wait to test until the age of 17. Learn more about getting an age waiver.

Residency: You are not required to be a Colorado resident to test.

Test Preparation or Instruction: Colorado does not require you to prepare for the HiSET exam in an adult education classroom, but it is recommended. Find an Adult Education Program near you.

Practice Test: You are not required to take a practice test before taking the official exam.

Identification: You must provide a valid government-issued photo ID. The identification must display:

  • Full name (matching the name used for exam registration)
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Signature
  • Photograph

Outdated or expired identification will not be accepted. IMPORTANT: On the day of your test, if you do not bring a valid government-issued ID, you will not be allowed to test.

Acceptable forms of photo ID include:

  • Passport
  • Government-issued driver’s license or temporary license
  • State or province ID card (including those issued by motor vehicle agencies)
  • National ID card
  • Military ID card
  • Tribal education card

If you don’t have any of the above, you can use an acceptable Supplemental ID.

Note: The test center may ask for Supplemental ID in addition to the above forms, so we recommend that you always bring it with you on test day.

Retesting

What to know: HiSET test takers may take each subtest a maximum of three (3) times in a calendar year.

How it works: If you take your first official HiSET subtest in the month of January and then take two retakes at a test center in the months of February and March, you would not be permitted to take that subtest again until the next calendar year starting in January, and you would then need to pay the full test price.

What it costs: You may retake each subtest two times over the 12 months following your first attempt by paying only the test center fee (noted above for each in-person subtest) or the at-home online proctor fee ($17.50 for each at-home subtest).
