Wyoming HiSET® Requirements

Earn the credential your future needs with the HiSET® High School Equivalency Test.

If you want to find a better job or take the first step on a pathway to a career, then you need to earn a high school equivalency credential. It is required for college and more important than ever to employers. Taking the HiSET exam can help change your life and expand your opportunities like it’s done for other test takers.

Wyoming Eligibility Requirements

To take the HiSET exam in Wyoming, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

Age: As promulgated under authority of Laws 2013 ch. 25 and W.S. 21-16-1308(b)(iv)(C), the Wyoming Community College Commission provides high school equivalency credentialing to the following groups of individuals who were unable to receive a high school diploma from their school district or residence:

  • Adults
  • Out-of-school youth (where youth is defined as anyone between the ages of 16-24).
    • Individuals who are 16-17 years of age must enroll in a Wyoming Adult Education center and successfully complete the age waiver process.
    • No one under the age of 16 may test.
  • Homeschooled individuals who did not receive a diploma but are able to demonstrate attainment of knowledge and skills that are equivalent to those which would be attained in a high school program of study through passing any of the state-authorized equivalency certification assessments. Homeschooled youth who are 16-17 years of age must complete the age waiver process described above
  • In-school youth (ages 16-21) cannot be credentialed.

Residency: You do not have to be a resident of Wyoming to take the exam.

Test Preparation or Instruction: Test preparation or instruction is encouraged, but is not mandatory.

Practice Test: The practice test is mandatory only for 16–17-year-old age-waiver applicants. Contact your local ABE center for details.

Identification: You must present identification on test day at the HiSET test center. Acceptable forms of identification include:

  • Current, unexpired government or accredited instructional institution-issued, unedited, unmodified/altered photo identification

Retesting

What to know: HiSET test takers may take each subtest a maximum of three (3) times in a calendar year.

How it works: If you take your first official HiSET subtest in the month of January and then take two retakes at a test center in the months of February and March, you would not be permitted to take that subtest again until the next calendar year starting in January, and you would then need to pay the full test price.

What it costs: You may retake each subtest two times over the 12 months following your first attempt by paying only the test center fee (noted above for each in-person subtest) or the at-home online proctor fee ($17.50 for each at-home subtest).
