Prepare for your test
HiSET test prep resources

Prepare for HiSET with four simple steps:

1. Create a plan:

Know when you need your scores or official credentials.

Before you schedule a test appointment, give yourself enough time to take the five subtests, for those subtests to be scored, and for your credentials to be processed. Consider that you may need to retake a subtest to meet the passing requirements.

2. Get study materials:

Find free and paid study guides, textbooks and practice tests specifically designed for the HiSET exam.

Studying on your own? You can also find online course and tutoring programs. HiSET study materials are available in the test taker toolkit, online, at public libraries, or through adult education centers.

3. Sign up for adult education and test preparation classes:

You may consider enrolling in preparation classes.

Many adult education centers, community colleges, and online programs offer classes to help you prepare for each subject area. In most states, these classes are free.

4. Take practice tests:

Take a practice test to find out if you are ready for your exam.

Test your knowledge with sample questions and practice tests. These tests can also help you familiarize yourself with the format of the test and find areas where you may need further study. We offer free and low-cost practice tests to download as PDF documents and answer sheets, or to take online as a computer based test. Use the Are You Ready for the HiSET® Exam? chart to find out if you’re ready for the actual subtest. Find the practice tests in the Resource Library.

  • Free HiSET practice tests are available in English and Spanish for Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Each free test is half the length of an official subtest and includes practice test questions, test directions and an answer key. Use the Are You Ready for the HiSET® Exam? chart to find out if you’re ready for the actual subtest.
  • Experience a real test environment with our free computer-based practice tests. Each test lasts 30-45 minutes and provides instant feedback, including explanations for incorrect answers. Available in English only.
  • Our paid practice tests, available in English and Spanish, provide a realistic HiSET exam experience. These practice tests include practice test questions, test directions and an answer key with rationales.
  • Official practice tests are available through approved adult education and literacy programs. Some states require test takers to pass an official practice test before registering for the HiSET exam.
