Missouri Eligibility Requirements
To take the HiSET exam in Missouri, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

Age
Typically, you may only take the HiSET exam if you are seventeen (17) years of age or older. However, if you are younger than seventeen (17) years of age, you may take the HiSET exam if you are approved by the Missouri High School Equivalency (HSE) Office for an HSE Age Waiver after meeting one of the conditions set by the Missouri State Board of Education.
You may apply for an age waiver by completing the Missouri HSE Age Waiver Form. Visit hse.mo.gov for additional details.
- NOTE: If none of the conditions in the HSE age waiver apply, you cannot be approved and must wait to test until you are seventeen (17) years of age.
Residency
You must be a resident of Missouri (with a Missouri mailing address) to take the HiSET exam.
Test Preparation or Instruction
Missouri does not have any test preparation or instruction requirements to take the initial test. However, they do encourage instruction before retesting. See the Additional Policies section below for more information.
Practice Test
Missouri does not require you to take a practice test to qualify for the HiSET exam.
Identification
You must present valid identification (ID) on test day at the HiSET test center. Outdated or expired ID will not be accepted.
With few exceptions, ID documents must meet all of the following requirements. Each ID document must:
- be an original document; photocopied documents are not acceptable
- show the test taker’s full name – exactly as it appears in the HiSET system
- meet Missouri High School Equivalency (HSE) ID requirements listed below
Acceptable forms of identification include:
- PERMANENT or TEMPORARY Missouri license
- Driver, Non-driver, Intermediate, Commercial or Instruction (learners) permit are acceptable
- Missouri non-driver ID card
- U.S. issued passport or passport card, and Missouri address in the HSE or HiSET system as proof of residency
- U.S. military ID and Missouri address in the HSE or HiSET system as proof of residency
- Tribal ID card and Missouri address in the HSE or HiSET system as proof of residency
Evaluation
Per RSMo 161.094 and HB1606, your information will be retained for two years, beginning on the first date of examination, for the purposes of evaluating the college and career placement rates. If you would prefer your information, not be included in the evaluation, email [email protected] and provide your last name, first initial and date of birth with the words “opt-out” in the subject or message area.
Requesting Your HSE transcript and Certificate
The Missouri High School Equivalency Program has partnered with DiplomaSender for fulfillment of requests for High School Equivalency transcripts and certificates.
After passing the HiSET® test, you will be awarded one free certificate and one free transcript. You must take action and register at DiplomaSender.com to receive your free documents.
HiSET Missouri Testing Options and Fees

Test Location: Offsite, remote proctored. System requirements and test environment guidelines must be met.
Note: A $10 state administration fee will be charged when you register for your first subtest. This is an annual fee and will be collected once every 12 (twelve) months. You can take a single subtest a maximum of 6 (six) times in a calendar year.
Retesting
What to know
HiSET test takers may take each subtest a maximum of six (6) times in a calendar year.
How it works
If you take your first official HiSET subtest in the month of January and then take 5 retakes at a test center between February and November, you would not be permitted to take that subtest again until the next calendar year starting in January.
What it costs
You may retake each subtest two times over the 12 months following your first attempt by paying only the test center fee (noted above for each in-person subtest) or the at-home online proctor fee ($17.50 for each at-home subtest). You will be charged the full amount including the Test Fee when scheduling your fourth attempt within the 12 months following your first attempt.
