Test Location: Offsite, remote proctored. System requirements and test environment guidelines must be met.
State Admin Fees: The State of Michigan collects an annual one-time state fee of $30 at the time you book your first test in a calendar year. For example, if a test taker booked 3 of her 5 subtests between November and December of 2023, she would pay an annual state fee of $30 on her first booked test in November, but no state fee on any of the other subtests booked before the end of December. If she then booked her 4th and 5th subtests in January of 2024, she would be required to pay the $30 annual fee again for the new year at the time she booked her 4th test, but would not pay any additional state fees for the remainder of the calendar year.
The test center fee must be paid each time you take a subtest.
Retesting
What to know
HiSET test takers may take each subtest a maximum of three (3) times within one year of your original purchase date.
How it works
If you take your first official HiSET subtest in the month of January and then take two retakes at a test center in the months of February and March, you would not be permitted to take that subtest again until the next calendar year starting in January, and you would then need to pay the full test price.
What it costs
You may retake each subtest two times over the 12 months following your first attempt by paying only the test center fee (noted above for each in-person subtest) or the at-home online proctor fee ($17.50 for each at-home subtest). If your retest takes place in the following calendar year, you will be required to pay the annual state administration fee of $30 when you book your first subtest. See note above for details.
